Red Alert warning: US Cyber Attacks now at “critical point”

A new dangerous level of cyber warefare was  just issued by US director of Intelligence. Russia was identified as one of the worst offenders. The director compared the signs to the ones ignored before September 11 attacks. Ironically the warning was announced during the Trump Putin meeting in Finland. The timing coincided with the indictment of 12 Russian intelligence agents accused of trying to hack democrats during the 2016 election. @Pheecetious. More>

Russian hackers found to be key players in tumbling the Clinton 2016 campaign

Hackers from the military intelligence agency, the GRU, apparently broke into the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee computers, using phishing techniques. They inserted malware to keep the access open and began sweeping up gigabytes worth of materials. In early June 2016 campaign officials understood the gravity of the hack, but it was too late. Are Smart TVs invading our privacy? Could they spy on us at home?

Two US senators, asked the FTC to launch an investigation into the privacy policies and practices of smart TV manufacturers. A recent New York Times report alarmed them after questioning the connectivity and interactivity of smart TVs, at the expense of consumer privacy. Did an ex-Apple employee steal the company’s driverless car secrets? Why did the FBI arrest the engineer on the way to China?

An ex-Apple engineer that worked on the autonomous Apple car project, was charged with stealing trade secrets, and accused of downloading sensitive files. Suspected of industrial espionage, the engineer was arrested just before embarking on a flight to a new position at the Chinese autonomous car start-up – Xiaopeng Motors. Russia battles over 25 million cyber-attacks during the World Cup

Not all the action was staged on the football field alone during the recent World Cup. Cyber criminal activity was running rife, warranting major international intervention, to ensure that the tournament was safely and successfully played out. Some 34 countries participated in a law enforcement center prior to the World Cup to monitor potential foul play. Could the Irish elections be the next target of mega hacks? Will fake news once more affect results?

A new government security report claims the Irish election  is exposed to cyber attacks capable of spreading fake news. Although the risk to the election is relatively low, the dissemination of disinformation and the risk of cyber attacks on the electoral system pose greater risks. Nevertheless, a 2018 study conducted by MIT found that fake news reached more people, penetrated deeper into social networks and spread much faster than accurate stories. @Pheecetious.  More>

Sextortion scam attempts to dupe users into paying blackmail fee

A new sextortion email scam, that claims to contain a real password aims at extracting blackmail fees from users . Claiming to have compromising images of the recipients the hacker has been asking for payment to prevent the images from being released.  Many people would normally be too jaded to fall for the scam with no evidence. But the inclusion of a real password makes it seem more convincing, and enough to fool some people. @NakedSecurity More>
